Author Eero Ahokas Title of the doctoral dissertation Aspects of Accuracy, Scanning Angle Optimization, and Intensity Calibration Related to Nationwide Laser Scanning Unit Department of Real Estate, Planning and Geoinformatics Publisher Finnish Geodetic Institute Series Publications of the Finnish Geodetic Institute Field of research Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing Manuscript submitted 5 April 2013 Date of the defence 14 November 2013 Permission to publish granted (date) 9 August 2013 Language English Article dissertation (summary + original articles) Abstract Airborne laser scanning is a technique that produces three-dimensional coordinates of the Earth’s surface as well as generating intensity values. Nationwide airborne laser scanning was launched in Finland in 2008 and some 180 000 km 2 had been scanned by the end of 2012. While the main goal in this endeavour is to produce an accurate digital elevation/terrain model (2 x 2 m 2 grid size) of the whole of the country, other applications, e.g. forestry, will benefit from the data as well. This study deals with the accuracy of airborne laser scanning, the optimization of the scanning angle, and the calibration of intensity. Accuracy assessments of airborne laser scanning have shown that the geometric accuracy of the method can fulfill the accuracy requirements for producing a nationwide digital elevation model with a grid of 2 x 2 m 2 . When studying the effect of scanning angle and biomass on elevation modeling capability, it was found that it would be possible to increase the scanning angle applied in Finland’s nationwide laser scanning. Even though the accuracy of the elevation model in the conditions prevailing in Finland allows increasing of the scanning angle, other applications would most probably not benefit from this. For example, these same data are sometimes used in nationwide forest inventory in Finland. A method for relative and absolute calibration of airborne laser scanning intensity was developed. The portable reference targets have proved their usefulness for calibration purposes. An intensity correction method should be used in pre-processing the airborne laser data. As a result of this, the usability of the intensity values may increase in practical applications, such as in classification. The studies constituting this dissertation have already impacted on the practical aspects of the nationwide airborne laser scanning dealing with accuracy assessment, the work done in the field of intensity calibration, and scanning angle analysis may have a further impact on nationwide laser scanning in the coming years. The optimization of airborne laser scanning flight parameters for multi-use nationwide laser scanning is a topic deserving further research.Airborne laser scanning is a technique that produces three-dimensional coordinates of the Earth’s surface as well as generating intensity values. Effect of Cooling on Bending Angle and Microstructure in Laser Tube Bending with Circumferential Scanning

Laser tube bending is a flexible forming process. Two irradiation methods of axial and circumferential scanning are generally used to form metal tubes. The two most important disadvantages of circumferential scanning are its lower bending angle and the time interval required between each scan for cooling purpose. In this research, a novel cooling strategy during laser tube bending with circumfe...

Optimization of the Scanning Angle for Countrywide Laser Scanning

Countrywide collection of laser scanning, mainly due to DTM derivation, is becoming increasingly attractive. Since Finland is a large country, optimization of scanning parameters is important from the economical point of view. High altitude measurements with large scan angle would be cost-effective if accuracy requirements are fulfilled. In this study two cases are described. In Masala low alti...

Topographic and Distance Effects in Laser Scanner Intensity Correction

The effect of incidence angle on the intensity of laser backscatter has been studied in photonics and optics, but the applications of these results to remote sensing of natural land targets are limited, as well as the availability of experimental validation data for airborne and terrestrial laser scanning, where the incidence angle correction using the Lambertian scattering law is common. We ha...

A Framework Based on Reference Data with Superordinate Accuracy for the Quality Analysis of Terrestrial Laser Scanning-Based Multi-Sensor-Systems

Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is an efficient solution to collect large-scale data. The efficiency can be increased by combining TLS with additional sensors in a TLS-based multi-sensor-system (MSS). The uncertainty of scanned points is not homogenous and depends on many different influencing factors. These include the sensor properties, referencing, scan geometry (e.g., distance and angle of...
